The charismatic Mustang comes in a lot of versions as Bullitt, Cobra, Mach 1 and Shelby, but there`s only a Boss. The Mustang Boss 302. After forty years, the old Boss is back in the business as the new Boss, updated, modern, ready for the road. According to Ford, it`s the quickest, best-handling straight-production Mustang ever offered by the company.
The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 has a fortified version of Mustang GT`s engine, so this new 5.0-liter DOHC 32-valve V8 transforms it into the most powerful sold Mustang without forced induction. The V8 is a 440 hp engine (88 hp/liter) and it can develop 7.500 rpm. A more aggressive control calibration generates 380 lb.-ft. of torque. This is not a reason to worry for the comfort because it still offers a smooth idle and low-end torque.
Power is transmitted through a clutch with upgraded friction materials and is delivered to the 3.73 ratio rear axle which uses carbon fiber plates in the limited-slip differential in order to improve torque use. The gear is handled by a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission.
The sound is very important for a Mustang Boss and the expectations are really high. The intake system is set to feed the engine with as little restrictions as possible while a retuned induction sound tube reproduces vividly what is happening under the hood. The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 includes a unique quad exhaust system that provides a sonic experience different from any other Mustang.
Mustang GT`s suspensions were improved, so the Boss Mustang`s have higher-rate coil springs, more rigid suspension bushings, bigger rear stabilizer bar. The interesting thing is that drivers have the possibility to set the shocks on a one to five scale and also to fine-tune the steering feel by selecting one of the three modes (comfort, normal and sport). There are also unique TCS (traction control system) and ESC (electronic stability control system) for drivers to use both on the street and at the track, but they can choose not to enable them.
The tires are summer special 255/40ZR19 front and 285/35ZR19 rear Pirelli P Zeros for stability and are special light alloy racing wheels.
Brembo four-piston calipers are used in the front, while in the back there are regular Mustang GT brakes enhanced with a high-quality pad compound specially for Boss. In addition to these, the new Boss has vented brake shields and one of a kind ABS tuning.
As the old design cues have been updated, the exterior of the car reminds of the legend, but the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 surely is a modern race car. As a distinctive feature, the roof panel will be black or white, the same with the side C-stripe. Other exterior elements are unique fascia and grille, blocked-off fog lamp opening, bold lower splitter and effective front splitter.
