Very muscular, sturdy and powerful, the American Bulldog is higher on the leg, swifter and more agile than its European counterpart. Some individuals can leap six o more feet into the air. The American Bulldog has large square head, strong jaws, wide chest, muscular neck and strong broad muzzle. If you research a list of dog breeds with their characteristics you will notice that this particular breed is both agile and vigilant and it makes an excellent guard dog.
Between the rounded eyes, there is a defined furrow with a distinct, deep stop. The general bite is reverse scissors. More ear types are acceptable, such as cropped, forward flap, half-pricked, and rose. Eyes can come in any color, but black eye rims are preferred instead of pink eye rims. The nose is brown, grizzle or black red, while the lips should be full, but not too loose.
The low-set tail is thick at the base and tapers to a point. The smooth, short coat features colors of brindle, such as red brindle, different shades of white, red, tan, brown, fawn, and piebald.
This breed is reliable, courageous, loyal, and determined. The American Bulldog loves children and it is not a hostile dog. Well-known for its heroic acts towards its master, the American Bulldog is very protective and needs a firm, confident pack leader. If you have read a list of dog breeds you probably know that the bulldog is an excellent bodyguard dog but it does require some discipline. To avoid aggressive behavior with strangers, well-socialize and obedience train this dog since it is a puppy. If not receiving daily mental and physical exercise, American Bulldog will be high strung and hard to handle.

The American Bulldog is easy to groom because of its short, harsh coat. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush. Bathe when necessary.
The original American Bulldog was used in bloody sport of bull bating, but also as working dogs at farms or ranches for tasks such as guards from hunting bear, raccoon, and wild boar. This breed can be trained to drive cattle and guard stock from different predators. The American Bulldog exists thanks to the intensive efforts of John D. Johnson of Summerville, Georgia.
