Living in this hectic and fast-paced era can be very stressful even for the calmest of people. Between family, friends, and work, making time for yourself can be quite difficult, but sometimes you simply just need it.

A lot of people think that finding time for themselves means being selfish, but those moments alone can work wonders for your mental and physical health. This is why, no matter how busy you are, you need to learn how to squeeze in some time for yourself.

This is why, we have put together this list of activities, perfect for the weekend and not only, to help ease off the stress and get you ready for yet another week at work.

Try meditation

Mediation is your number one ticket to Zen city. Even a few minutes of practice every day can help relieve stress and anxiety. It helps you clear your mind from exhausting thoughts, and leaves you ready to tackle any challenge that may come your way.

Don’t know where to start? Find a quiet place, either at home or in nature, sit comfortably, and start reciting a mantra of your choice. It can be as simple as a single word, or a phrase, but try to keep it short. If you can’t think of a mantra, try visualization meditation, or focus on your breath. Feel the air going in and out of your body, and let all of your thoughts float by, without concentrating on them. Keep the focus on your breath or mantra, and try to do this for at least 5 minutes.

Listen to music

There is a strange but powerful connection between music and the human brain, so why not take advantage of it? You can make a playlist of your favorite music and dance your heart away around the house, to get your blood flowing and reenergize. Or, if you want to simply sit back and don’t move a muscle, try looking for some downtempo or chillhop music. There are countless playlists online, so all you need to do is look them up.

Draw or paint

Doodling and painting can be very therapeutic, and you don’t have to be a rare talent to try them out. Simply get some colors and a canvas and let your imagination run wild. Chances are, you will be more impressed with the results than you actually think.

If painting is not for you, try picking up an adult coloring book. You can find them at any book store, and they have countless options to choose from. Another thing you can try out is zentangle, which is the elevated and more sophisticated form of doodling that implies creating more studied patterns. It’s easy to learn and has gained quite some popularity at the moment.

Connect with nature

Remember when you were a kid and lost yourself or hours playing in the backyard or the park? Connection with nature is very important and can be an amazing way to get out of your daily routine. You can take a walk in the park, get a blanket and sit under a tree, or tie a hammock and meditate.

If you are feeling more adventurous, try going hiking somewhere near your city. Chances are, you will find a forest or a park nearby, that you haven’t explored yet. Or, if you want to truly enjoy nature, why not go camping for a weekend? There is something about camping under the stars, a feeling you can’t find anywhere in the city.

Set up an at-home spa

Sometimes, all you need is a good bath. But this time, take it to the next level and create an at-home spa where you can relax and forget about whatever worries you may have. Fill your bathtub with water, add in a bath bomb, or some bath salts and essential oils, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back and enjoy.

You can even go ahead and fill the room up with candles, incense sticks, and turn off the lights. You need to create a calm and soft environment, and the lightbulbs are surely not going to help you with that. Read a bit about aromatherapy, to see which kind of smells help with relaxation, and choose your favorites.

Read a good book

There is something about a good story that makes you break out of the real world and really emerge into a new realm. Choose a book that you like, make yourself a cup of tea and let yourself be captured by the world of the writer.

It does not matter what type of book you choose, as long as you find it enjoyable and relaxing. It can be fiction, poetry, a self-discovery or psychology book. Anything that helps you get your mind off things for a few hours is more than perfect.
