Overview, temperament and recommendations
Siberian Husky is a northern dog (the closest Nordic wolf relative), which impresses with his blue metal face, and characteristic facial expression. Siberian Husky is not a dog for everyone, because it has a very independent nature and is recognized as very difficult to train – and has kept many wild animal instincts and tends to follow them regardless of the education received. A husky with “Wanderlust” will ignore the commands of the owner and will go where he urges instincts tell him, so it is recommended to use a leash whenever you take him out for a walk. Also, the husky is a born hunter and will take every opportunity to “hunt” cats and other small animals; therefore, socialization is very important and should start in his early months of life. Which may not recommend a husky adoption by a family in which there are other animals – cats, hamsters, guinea pigs – because even if he get used to them he will never lose his hunter instincts even if he manages to suppress them for a while.
Certainly his instincts will awaken at some point as a game between your animals when it will turn into a hunting game in which the husky will emerge triumphant, with prey in mouth. Thus, Siberian Husky owner needs a strong character, ready to face the apparent stubbornness of the dog, which will be more “companion” than master. We do not recommend a husky to people who do not allocate time for long walks outdoors and even those who do not have enough time to take care of him and would leave only several hours a day, because the Husky needs something to keep him occupied otherwise he gets bored, in which case it will show boredom destructive behavior – will eat various items in the house or yard or will probably just dig in the area where you planted roses. Meanwhile, the Siberian Husky is a friendly dog and doesn’t show possession instincts towards objects or to family members, generally posted as guard dogs, they are generally curious, alert and active, while showing a dignified reserve to strangers, without being aggressive.
General appearance
Siberian Husky is a medium sized dog, but agile compact, dense with bushy fur, keeping its relative features mostly wild wolf. The body is well proportioned, a combination of speed, endurance and physical strength, which made him an excellent sled dog. The male is generally more massive and more “stuff”, but not excessive compared with the female, which is supple without being fragile.
Dimensions, proportions:
The male reaches 54-60 cm at the withers, females – 50-55 cm. Viewed in profile, body length from shoulder to rump is slightly larger than the height at the withers.
Weight:
The male reaches 20 to 28 kg, female reaches 16 to 23 kg. Weight is proportional to the height at the withers.
Head
Because of the blue eyes and his mask (which is not mandatory in the breed standard, but is present in most specimens in our country) a husky facial expressions convey a contradictory mix of messages – seems friendly but also evil, those who describe facial expressions look like a husky use “has a crazy intelligent look “, “His eyes scare me but at the same time urge me to get closer.” The head is of medium size, proportioned to the body, slightly rounded on top, stop well defined. Viewed from all angle, the head of a husky should not be too long, or too stuffed. The muzzle is also of medium size, with lips tightly closed. Bite must be correct, closing in a “scissors” pattern. The eyes are elongated, are positioned slightly obliquely at a moderate distance from each other. The color blue is a characteristic of the breed, but is not mandatory, standard brown or dark brown eyes and even different colors (squinting) are acceptable. Ears are of medium size, not to large nor very small, triangular, fleshy and well feathered. Nose color should be consistent with the coat color, so husky fur predominantly black, gray or brown nose will be black, reddish-haired husky will have brown noses, the white husky, nose is pink.
Body
The neck is arched and well positioned. The chest is deep and strong, but not overly wide and the shoulders are muscular and well developed. The ribs are slightly flattened on the sides of the body. The legs are strong with well developed bones but not massive, with oval feet, not very elongated and tightly closed with thick fur between the toes. Redundant finger from the front legs can be removed surgically.
The coat is composed of two layers, hair and flakes, with wire length, very thick. Flake-hair is soft and dense but is normally missing during periods of shedding or tends to be less represented on Husky’s kept indoors all year round. In order to make the coat pleasant to the touch and not too rough you must brush it till it gets a smooth texture. Accepted colors vary across the possible range, from black to completely white. Mask and clubs on the forehead, although these characteristics of the breed, are not mandatory.
In motion, husky feels like it “floats” on the soil surface, running seemingly without effort. Husky’s have a proud position of the body and head, inspiring strength and agility.
