Due to the fact that football is such an old game it is very hard to establish when the game was actually invented and what were the first football rules. As it spread across the game suffered multiple modification until reaching his present form. Since this sport is very loved in the U.S.A almost all male Americans are familiar with its rules. However if you are just getting to know this game and are finding it a tad complicated we are here to provide all the right answers for you.

The basic football rules are quite simple once you break them down. At the beginning of the game the team captains get together for the coin toss. The person who wins can either choose to start the game with the ball in his team’s possession or he can choose his side of the field. The purpose of the game is to transport a ball into the oppositions end zone. If you manage to do this then you have scored a touchdown which is worth six points. A touchdown can be achieved either by crossing the goal line while holding the ball or by catching the ball while you are in the end zone. In order to transport the game you can run while trying to avoid being tackled or you can try to pass it to a free player.

While watching a football game you may have heard the term” down”. This is one of the most essential elements of the football rules. It is basically a chance given to the offensive team. The team gets four such chances and it needs to move the ball forward in sections of ten years. If the offensive team manages to do this he is awarded a first down and 4 more chances. If the team can’t advance the ball in 4 downs then they lose possession of the ball. Usually on the fourth down, if the player is close enough to the goal post he tries to do a field goal which is worth three points. A field goal is scored when the kicker kicks the ball through the post. Another way to score points is to kick the ball through the uprights after having scored a touchdown. If the team manages to get the ball in the end zone again they get two points instead of one. If a member of the offensive team is tackled with the ball while he is in his own end zone, the defensive team receives two points. These are the basic football rules regarding the actual playing.

A game of American Football consists of two competing teams battling for points. Each team is allowed to have 11 players on the field. The duration of a game is 60 minutes and it is split in 15 minutes quarters. A 12 minutes break is allowed after 30 minutes of playing time. If at the end of the 60 minutes the teams are tied, then a 15 minutes sudden-death overtime is allowed.
