Journal Writing Tips

A lot of people don’t know the difference between diary writing and journal writing. While some may argue that they are the same thing, others consider them to be quite different. There are a few main differences that separate a journal from a diary. For starters you don’t have to write in a journal on a daily basis. Unlike diaries who are focused more on descriptions, journals can contain random thoughts and require a certain inspiration. You can write in a journal as often as you want, even several times a day. You can write about your worries, your goals, you can draw or write poetry. The only thing you need to keep in mind when writing a journal is to tell the truth.

There are a lot of types of journals such as a nature journals, book journals, sketchbook journals, achievement journals or working out journals. Some types of journals are focused on some specific periods of time such as summer journals or travel journals. Basically a journal allows you to step away from your daily routine and explore your creativity as well as your personal universe. There are no real rules about journal writing. You just need to keep in mind your goals. Are you writing this journal because you want to improve yourself, express your creativity or document a journey? No matter the reason if you are true to yourself your journal will reflect your inner thoughts and feelings. Furthermore a journal is a great way to witness your personal growth from an outsider’s point of view. You can read old entries and see how your goals and priorities have changes.

Although there are no specific rules for journal writing there are a few tips that you can use in order to turn the writing process into a pleasant experience. First of all you need to pick a notebook that fits your needs. For example if you want to make a sketch journal it is advised that you buy a larger journal with white pages. If you want to write a travel journal you should buy a small notebook that you can easily carry around with you in your purse or pocket. This way you can write in it whenever you visit something worth mentioning. The next thing you need is a good pen with a pleasant ink color. Once you start writing try not to concern yourself with grammar or calligraphy. Just write whatever comes to mind in order for the journal to be unique and personal. One thing you need to keep in mind is that journal writing must only involve matters of significance to you.
